Indigenous People of Puerto Rico

Borinken

  • Taino for a day? Nope, Every day.

Several Years ago I was invited to participate at a multicultural Festival. One Catch, You gotta represent!! Challenge Accepted!! The white tunic and long front skirt with my representation of the things that meant the most as symbols of my Taino Pride. The palm trees, Sea Turtle and Hibiscus are some of my favorite things to draw and burn. You will see these designs throughout most of my creations.

  • Yuiza

Strong Warrior Princess - When the Spaniards arrived Yuiza was instrumental in trying to maintain the peace. After her husband was killed she became the Cacique (Chief). The town of Loiza in Puerto Rico is named after her and is considered to be the birthplace of the Perfect Puerto Rican.. The mix of Spaniard, African and Indigenous Taino People.

  • Puerto Rico

There is so much History in this tiny Island! Found several years before colonization began in North Americas, its was pretty amazing to find out just how mixed my heritage is. Spain, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Nigeria and Sephardic Jew along with a heavy dose of Taino all make me who I am. Proud to be Taino!
