Even the Wind and Waves Obey

It always amazes me how similar Bible verses will continually pop up throughout the week, Whether through music or sermons I’m listening to on the radio or a meme someone posted on Social Media. I mentioned the other day on a post that our family doesn’t believe in coincidence but rather “Divine Intervention”. “Look at God!” is a regular saying around here. So when similar themes pop up, I take it that Jesus has his hand in that somehow and I need to stop and pay attention.

Sometimes stopping is not convenient. I run and run until I crash and burn. But lately I’ve taken the opportunity to stop working by 10PM. Since I’m still currently running Mom’s Taxi until my son can get his driver’s license, I end up running anywhere between 11pm and 1 AM so it’s not really a rest, but a pause. But in this story, Jesus was sleeping. I’m sure His schedule was hectic. Tons of folks wanting His attention, Miracles, for Him to feed them…. Yeah, He knows the feeling.

And when the storm came, He was resting. Not frantic, not wailing, not blaming everyone else on the boat for the storm. And when He got up He asked them why they had so little faith. Hadn’t they known who they were with? Why after all this time did they think He would let them drown in the sea? Because it really is human nature to doubt, to blame, to be self-centered and selfish.

So what would happen if we slept through the storm. Would they think you are callous, unconcerned, indifferent. Of course they would. Even if they knew you were a follower of Christ. So now I sleep, I rest, knowing that even if the storms do come, He is with me.

Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
